Established in 2001, the Art Academy of LZU is one of the key academies of LZU with high professional starting point and full artistic vitality. Supported by the profound cultural heritage and subject advantages, Art Academy draws rich regional traditional culture and explores a new school-running pattern which is for the world and for the future, to cultivate comprehensive and innovative high-level professional artistic personals with solid professional knowledge, broad horizon, acute mind and good manners.

The academy has strong teaching stuff, and most of our professors have studied in prestigious art colleges, home and abroad, including Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, The Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music, The Belarusian State Academy of Music, Academy of Fine Arts of University of Michigan, Academy of Fine Arts of Herzen University, Central Conservatory of Music, Central Academy of Fine Arts, and so on. Besides, the college also employs 16 visiting professors from home and abroad. Equipped with Institute of Art and Design and Institute of Music, which consist of the disciplines of visual communication design, environmental design, music performance, digital media art and so forth, the academy hosts master degree programs of fine arts and offers international platform for the exchanges in fields of visual communication design, environmental art, music performance and dance performance. Also, it has a total of 505 undergraduates and postgraduates.

The college always attaches great importance to teaching work, firmly establishes the central position of teaching work and adhere to the basic principle of improving teaching quality to support the development of the academy, deepen educational reform, enhance the basic teaching construction, strengthen teaching management and constantly improve teaching quality. In recent years, lots of teachers were awarded The Second Prize in Art Design of the Competition for Works about Clean Government Culture, Advanced Individual in Art Education Awarded by Gansu Provincial Department of Education, Young Teachers in Talent of Institutions of Higher Education in Gansu Province, Achievement Award of Gansu Provincial Level, and also honorary titles of Excellent Guidance Award and Gardener Award in music, dance, painting and design.

The academy focuses on cultivating students’ capacities for innovation and practice by proactively organizing them to participate in various competition and holding various professional concerts and exhibitions. Students have won numerous awards in professional competitions such as vocal music, instrumental music, dance, graphic design, environmental art design, calligraphy and painting at home and abroad. Among them, the students' professional chorus won the Silver Award of Chamber Music Group in the 4th and 6th World Chorus Competitions, and participated in performance interchange activities in many countries; students majoring in music performance went to four countries in Western Asia to exchange performances. Instrumental and vocal music as piano, accordion, violin, pipa (Chinese string musical instrument), erhu (a two-string bowed instrument) and others have won many honors in the "Golden Bell Award" and "Young Singers’ Competition held by CCTV". Works of graphic design, packaging design, photography, painting and calligraphy have won many awards in provincial, national and international "design competitions" and professional "art exhibitions". Over the years, the high-level professionals trained by the College are generally welcomed by the employing units.

The Academy has always attached importance to scientific research, undertaking arts projects and sociology projects of the National Social Science Fund, youth projects of humanities and social science of the Ministry of Education, discipline construction projects of the Central University Fund and major horizontal projects, etc. In recent years, 160 papers have been published in academic journals at home and abroad, including more than 50 core journal papers and monographs.

The Academy actively carries out international exchange and cooperation. With the strongly support of the university, it has established friendly inter-school relations with art academies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Scholars are sent to each other for academic exchanges, and students for exchange and training. Every year, more than ten students study in Universities in those countries and regions for six months to one year. Every year, well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad are invited to give lectures in our Academy.

We have a beautiful running environment and complete teaching facilities. In the art building with an area of 10,000 square meters, it has a concert hall with first-class acoustics and all ready stage facilities, which can contain 400 people, a 300 square meters exercise hall and a 400 square meters art exhibition hall. And it has more than 30 studios, multimedia classrooms, design studios, comprehensive training rooms and more than 70 piano rooms. It also has laboratories of environmental design, printing technology, digital piano, animation and new media, graph creativity and others.

The graduates have worked and employed in universities, military units, professional troupes, news media, research institutions and other related enterprises in China, and have been generally welcomed and praised by all sectors of society.
